With the music, comes the musical instruments. There are lots and lots of such instruments that can give as many as possible different sounds. The academic study of musical instruments is called organology. Researchers have discovered archaeological evidence of musical instruments in many parts of the world, some finds are 67,000 years old. Regardless of how the sound in an instrument is produced, many musical instruments have a keyboard as the user-interface. Keyboard can be played along with different instruments.
The great majority of musical instruments fall readily into one of six major categories: bowed strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, keyboard, and the guitar family, the first four of which form the basis of the modern symphony orchestra.
The great majority of musical instruments fall readily into one of six major categories: bowed strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, keyboard, and the guitar family, the first four of which form the basis of the modern symphony orchestra.
The four main stringed instruments are the violins, the violas, the cellos and the double basses. Each have four strings arranged in order of pitch and can be played by means of a bow.
The four major woodwind strings are Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Basson. All these instruments work by means of a system of keys (holes) which when pressed and unpressed produce sounds of different notes and pitch. The wind to the holes is provided by the mouth.
BRASS INSTRUMENTS:
Like the woodwind instruments, these too are played with the mouth but differ from the former as these instruments have a cup shaped end to hold the lips. Trumpet, French horn, Trombone and Tuba are the principle brass instruments.
A percussion instrument is the one where a resonating surface is struck by the player, either by hand or by some form of stick. The popular examples of these are:
Tuned: timpani or kettle drum, xylophone, tubular bells, vibraphone, marimba. Occasionally, the piano and celesta are included as part of the percussion section.
Indefinite pitch: triangle, gong, castanets, whip, rattle, tambourine and a variety of drums (side, tenor, bass, tabor, bongo etc.).
There are four major keyboard instruments as well. They are Plucked (e.g. harpsichord, virginal, spinet), Struck (e.g. piano, celesta), Aerated(e.g. organ) and Electronic (e.g. electronic organ, synthesizer).
The 'classical' guitar is typically a Spanish-derived, six-stringed instrument played using a plectrum or the finger-nails. This instrument is very popular among the youngsters these days. It is like a fashion for many youngster to play a guitar.
