Whatever form of art we may talk about, its main characteristic is that it is pleasing to our senses. There are few similar terms in this field which I would like to mention.
Visual art: As it mane suggests, these are the art forms which are visible. Usually in this category materials or mediums are used such as images, signs or symbols. Types of Visual arts are as varied as media, subject matter and technology allow. Visual art can be further classified as drawing, painting, sculpture, calligraphy and photography.
Applied art: Applied art is simply the application of designs and creativity to the normal objects of our day to day life. For example a cup, a magazine or a bench . The fields of industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design, decorative art and functional art are considered as applied arts.
Decorative art: The art concerned with the design and decoration of product thereby increasing their utility. Ceramics, glass, jewelry, metalware etc are associated with decorative art. This is different from what we call “fine art”.
Fine art: The term “art” is a synonym of Fine Art. Historically, the five greater fine arts were painting, sculpture, architecture, music and poetry, with minor arts including drama and dancing. Today, the fine arts commonly include the visual art and performing art forms, mentioned above.
Performing art: This type is the most unique one since in this form, the artist uses his/her body in place of objects. The term "performing arts" first appeared in the English language in the year 1711. Music, Dance, Drama are few examples of performing art.
