Drawing can be defined as linear sketching of imagination, scenes, emotions or objects. Drawing is an independent art form. Bodies, space, three dimensionality as well as movements can be depicted through drawing. It provides the widest scope for creative art. It is the best technique of producing images on paperusually with ink, graphite, crayon or chalk.
The main techniques used in drawing are: line drawing, hatching, crosshatching, random hatching, scribbling, stippling, and blending. An artist who excels in drawing is referred to as a draftsman or draughtsman. Drawing goes back at least 16,000 years to Paleolithic cave representations of animals such as those at Lascaux in France and Altamira in Spain. Drawing has been highly appreciated since the Renaissance, greatly because it implies spontaneity — an embodiment of the artist's ideas. With paper becoming common in Europe by the 15th century, drawing was adopted by masters such as Sandro Botticelli, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci.
There is a very thin line between drawing and painting. There are different types of drawing. Below I have tried to give few information about different types of drawing.

Ø Sketching: Free hand drawing which is usually drawn as a result of imagination is called as sketching. It is usually not considered as a finished work.
Ø Illustrative drawing: It is used as an aid in explaining things. For example diagrams of heart and brain in Biology. They give immediate idea to the viewer about the object.
Ø Geometric drawing: It is very helpful in construction fields. It gives proper idea of scales, sections and dimensions.
Ø Life drawing: Drawings that directly result from life’s observation such as portraits, sculptures and cartoons.
Ø Analytical drawing: These sketches are done for clear understanding of things.
Ø Emotive drawing: As from its name itself we can understand that these drawings are used to express different emotions, mood and feelings.
