A carpenter is involved in carpentry. He is a skilled craftsperson working with timber for buildings, furniture, roof making, floor making, staircase and other objects. The word "carpenter" is which is derived from the Latin carpentries meaning "(maker) of a carriage.” Usually carpentry is done by male. In Unites states, 98.5% of carpenters are male and in 1999 it was the fourth most male-dominated occupation in the country.
Carpenters according to their work can be classified into a few categories. A finish carpenter also called a joiner is one who does finish carpentry such as cabinetry, furniture making, fine woodworking, model building, instrument making, parquetry etc. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who does fine and detailed work specializing in the making of cabinets made from wood, wardrobes, dressers, storage chests, and other furniture designed for storage. A trim carpenter specializes in molding and trim, such as door and window casings, mantels, baseboard, and other types of ornamental work. For a scene fixation a scenic carpenter is involved. He fixes and dismantles the temporary scenery and sets. A luthier is someone who makes or repairs stringed instruments. The
word luthier comes from the French word for lute, "luth".
As is true of other building trades, carpentry work is sometimes strenuous. Prolonged standing, climbing, bending, and kneeling often are necessary. Carpenters risk injury working with sharp or rough materials, using sharp tools and power equipment, and working in situations where they might slip or fall. Carpenters are employed throughout the country in almost every community and make up the second largest building trades occupation. They held about 1.3 million jobs in 2008.
The living Lord Jesus Christ is also considered to be the son of a carpenter. Sometimes it is also believed that He was a carpenter. Carpentry skill is gained through experience and study. One can also consider carpentry as a hobby. With increasing concern towards green and clean world, we also have green carpenters who specialize in the use of environmentally friendly,energy-efficient and sustainable sources of building materials to use in construction projects.
